Quote of the week by S&D vice-president Tanja Fajon

"For the first time, the rainbow flag will fly alongside the flags of the EU member states outside the European Parliament. This maybe only a symbolic gesture but it represents something important, that we stand united with LGBTI people in Europe and around the world who are still discriminated against because of their gender identity and sexual orientation."

Upcoming activities

Our focus in the upcoming week will be on the MFF - Multiannual Financial Framework. We will be debating the issue and updates on our conclusions can be followed via our website or social media.

The transport committee will be voting on the new Eurovignette Directive on Thursday : The Euro road charging Directive.  S&D MEP Christine Revault d’Allonnes is the author of the parliamentary report on the charging of vehicles for the use of road infrastructures. The new Directive will be a turning point to achieve the EU White Transport paper’s objective, and achieve the S&Ds priorities to better apply the user-pays and the polluter-pays principles on the European road network.

Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg will be in Brussels next Tuesday to answer our questions regarding the recent data protection scandal. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the proceedings.

Our MEPs are also busy preparing the upcoming Plenary session. Some of the important topics on the table will be the protection against dumped and subsidised imports from countries not members of the EU and the EU youth strategy.

We’ll also be hearing from Xavier Bettel, the Prime-Minister of Luxembourg, as he lays out his vision for the future of Europe, as well as from Alpha Condé, President of the Republic of Guinea and Juan Manuel Santos Calderón, President of the Republic of Colombia.

Also on the 24th of May we are pleased to invite you to attend the conference on Ensuring Fair Mobility of Companies. The Conference will provide an excellent opportunity to exchange views on the recently published legislative proposals of the European Commission within the "EU Company Law Package". The event will take place on Thursday, 24 May 2018, from 9:00 to 12:30, in room ASP 3G-3, in Brussels.

We are also getting closer to our fourth edition of the School of Democracy, from 6 - 8 June, in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Over the course of three days, 100 young people from both inside and outside the EU will discuss the major issues facing Europe and the world. Participants will have the chance to debate with experts from the political, economic and academic worlds.

And our upcoming TOGETHER events have already been set in place. Follow our new platform for updates on programmes and speakers.
