The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament reiterate their support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity and independence of Ukraine. The S&D Group will continue to support the new Ukrainian government's efforts to build a new country.

S&D Group president Gianni Pittella MEP said:

"The S&Ds underline that the only way forward and most effective defence for Ukrainian sovereignty and independence is to rapidly implement reforms. These are needed in order to obtain a reliable and impartial judicial system, promote the rule of law, eradicate corruption, decentralise power and protect media freedom and minority rights. The Minsk Protocol is the reference document for peace."

S&D vice-president responsible for foreign affairs Knut Fleckenstein MEP added:

"Ukraine faces serious political, security and socio-economic challenges and the conflict in eastern Ukraine represents a serious impediment to the country's development.

"Any crisis also provides opportunities. We strongly encourage the new government and Ukrainian parliament to adopt and implement these much-needed political and socio-economic reforms without delay. Building a democratic and prosperous state based on the rule of law is the best way forward.

"At the same time, our thoughts are with the innocent civilians who are suffering in the conflict-affected areas of eastern Ukraine. We call for further humanitarian assistance and we urge all parties concerned to immediately stop the fighting. There is no military solution to the crisis. All parties need to demonstrate real commitment to de-escalation and maximum restraint. We urge all parties to fully implement the Minsk Protocol without further delay and we support the ongoing diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful settlement. An inclusive national dialogue should be resumed and no effort for reconciliation should be spared."
