The S&D Group in the European Parliament invites protesters and government officials in Hong Kong to seriously continue talks in order to reach a peaceful and democratic solution to the current dispute.

Gianni Pittella, president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, said:

"We are in favour of a peaceful solution to the Hong Kong dispute and consider that this can be achieved only through dialogue. Violence is not a democratic solution.

"We reiterate our position on respecting the legal framework, the rule of law, democracy and human rights, and we urge both sides to avoid any violence.

"The democratisation process in Hong Kong must continue smoothly.

"We are looking at China with the perspective of two fundamental principles: the 'One China' policy and 'One country, two systems'. These two principles must be respected by everybody."

Said S&D MEP Jo Leinen:

"We welcome the on-going dialogue between the protesters and the Hong Kong authorities. We consider this development as the only way for a peaceful solution acceptable for both sides.

"We underline the importance of EU-China relations, on economic issues, but also on other areas of common interest. We understand the need for closer cooperation and we are ready to face challenges of a different nature together, from climate issues, to security issues."
