European Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament fully support today’s adopted resolution against executions in Kuwait and Bahrain.

The S&D Group expresses, once again, serious concerns about these inhumane practices and new executions by underlining the lack of respect of human rights in these two countries.

In a joint statement, S&D Group vice-president Elena Valenciano and S&D MEP Soraya Post said:

"We deplore Kuwait’s and Bahrain’s authorities’ decision to return to capital punishment and we reiterate the EU's clear position against these practices and for the abolition of the death of penalty.

"We strongly call on the Bahraini authorities to halt the execution of Mohammad Ramadan and Hussain Moosa and to ensure a re-trial in accordance with international law and standards.

"We call on the governments of these two countries to sign and ratify the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

"We urge the Bahraini government to put an end to the ongoing crackdown on all peaceful activists, fully respect the rights to freedom of expression and association and stop the practice of arbitrary revocation of citizenship."
