The possible creation of transnational lists would pave the way for not only a pan-European constituency but also for real European direct-representation rather than the current national system. Thanks to this vote, the S&D Group aims also to cut the overall number of MEPs and rebalance the numbers from underrepresented countries. It is a first step but one that takes us towards a political, transparent and democratic Europe.

Upcoming activities
The S&D Group will mostly devote the week to preparing the next plenary session from 5-8 February in Strasbourg. The main topics on the agenda include the composition of the European Parliament, the end of geo-blocking of online goods or services, the rule of law in Romania, the EU strategy for the Western Balkans and the debate on the future of Europe with the Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenković.
S&D Euro MPs of the committees of civil liberties and economic and monetary affairs will also back a new deal to strengthen the fight against money laundering on Monday.
Our members in the Agriculture and Fisheries Committee will also be keeping a close eye on the Council meeting on the topic, scheduled to take place on Monday, as well. Ministers are said to have and exchange of views on the Commission communication on “The Future of Food and Farming”.
We’re also busy preparing a series of events - a new Together event in Bruges, the Youth for Gender Equality Forum and School of Democracy, just to name a few.

elections. The debate features specialists, as well as students and members of the European Parliament.

We are also looking forward to our upcoming edition of the Youth for Gender Equality Forum, scheduled to take place in Brussels next week, between 30th January - 1st February.
Step it up for Gender Equality is an interactive and inspiring initiative to promote dialogue, exchange, learning and networking for people engaged in promoting gender equality in their daily lives. Our Group is organising it in collaboration with the Foundation for European Progressive Studies, PES Women, Young European Socialists, Rainbow Rose and the Global Progressive Forum.

This year we’re organising our fourth School of Democracy, from 6 - 8 June, in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Over the course of three days, 100 young people from both inside and outside the EU will discuss the major issues facing Europe and the world. Participants will have the chance to debate with experts from the political, economic and academic worlds.
To be eligible to apply you have to be between 18 and 25 and be passionate about progressive politics. Travel, hotel and meal expenses will be paid by us.
Registrations are now open!
Only the first 1000 applications will be taken into consideration. The top 100 of these will be selected for the School and will be contacted by the end of March 2018 at the latest.
