S&D Group launches their "Call for action for an alternative vision of Europe" in Prague ahead of the EP elections
Ahead of the EP elections in May, the S&D Group presented their pledge for an alternative vision of Europe with a final event in Prague yesterday under the "Relaunching Europe" initiative.
The interactive event discussed the topic of "Europe growing together" and ended with a call for action to change Europe. Speakers included, among others, S&D President Hannes Swoboda, EP President Martin Schulz, leading European academics and young participants who had joined the Relaunching events from various European countries.
When speaking in Prague, S&D Group president Hannes Swoboda said:
"It is time to relaunch Europe and give people back trust and hope in a better future. We need more jobs in Europe, especially for the youth; we must have a greater social balance and we must stand up for more fairness.
"We see rising poverty and an increasing division in Europe between East and West, and North and South.
"Today we celebrate ten years of enlargement to the East. Yet we hear more and more voices that question the EU as such and oppose next steps on enlargement or neighbourhood policy. Fundamental values such as free movement of labour and the Schengen Agreement are threatened by nationalistic groups.
"With our Relaunching Europe initiative we held 26 events in 23 countries. We have listened to people and discussed their concerns.
"In the EP elections in May, European citizens have the choice. They can either join in to change Europe and make it a better and fairer place for all, or they can abstain and accept the rise of anti-European and anti-democratic forces.
"We stand for a changing Europe. What we heard over the last two years in whichever corner of the continent we visited was: Yes, we want Europe but we want a better Europe.
"Our group of progressive forces in the European Parliament is ready to fight for this better and alternative Europe to make it a place worth living in for all of us".
The Relaunching Europe initiative, launched by the S&D Group in 2012, aims at entering into a dialogue with citizens and journalists all over Europe about the future of the EU.
