Today the president of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, met the vice-president of the Cuban National Assembly, Ana María Mari Machado. Following this meeting, Pittella reaffirmed the Group’s position against the United States’ embargo on the island.

Gianni Pittella said:

“There should be no obstacles to the prompt ratification of the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement (PDCA) between the EU and Cuba.

“We believe that it is time to turn the page and formalise fair and constructive bilateral relations, in political, economic and social terms. These relations will benefit the Cuban and European people.

“The embargo is a burden left over from a different era, it doesn’t make sense historically and it damages not only the Cuban people and the future of the economy on the island, but also the European companies which legitimately invest or trade with Cuba.”
