Following today’s outcome of the College of Commissioners concerning the situation in Poland, the S&D leader, Gianni Pittella, stated:

"The Polish government is constantly jeopardising the rule of law and the legal base of democracy in Poland. This is not acceptable and we cannot remain silent. Any breach in rule of law affects the whole of Europe and not just Poland. The S&D Group, therefore, welcomes the latest swift reactions from the EU Commission.

"Should the Polish government and authorities continue to disregard the warning signals from Brussels concerning the independence of the judiciary, the S&D Group considers it requisite the activation of all possible infringement proceedings against Poland for the violation of EU law. The independence of the judiciary power, as well as the freedom of press, are the fundamental pillars on which the European Union is based.

"The door for dialogue is still open. It is now up to the Polish authorities to show their good will and get back to the European legal democratic framework."
