The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament consider that commissioner-designate Federica Mogherini showed a thorough knowledge of her portfolio today in Brussels during her hearing with the Parliament's foreign affairs committee.  She expressed her readiness to work in close co-operation with the European Parliament in order to give to the EU greater political impact and more visibility on EU foreign policy.

Gianni Pittella, president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, said:

"Federica Mogherini demonstrated she is fully aware of the need for the European Union to shape a coherent foreign-policy strategy and play a full political role in international crises where peace and human rights are at stake. After years of too much talk and not enough action, the time has come for the EU to speak loudly with one voice in the most effective and practical way, particularly as these threats to peace and security and regional conflicts are now all around Europe.

"Ms. Mogherini will play a full role, both as vice-president of the Commission and as the EU's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, and I am certain that she will work and act in close co-operation with the European Parliament, respecting the community method.

"Therefore, we strongly believe Ms Mogherini will be an excellent high representative for foreign affairs and security policy as well as an efficient vice-president of the European Commission."

Richard Howitt MEP, S&D Group foreign affairs co-ordinator who helped lead the questioning at the hearing, said:

"Europe needs a foreign policy that distinguishes itself from the past, is more outspoken and builds greater unity between EU member states – and I am confident Federica Mogherini will accomplish all of these.

"As a former foreign minister herself, Ms. Mogherini knows how to give real leadership in the EU Foreign Affairs Council and, whilst welcoming the achievements of her predecessor, demonstrates an ability to do things differently where she has to."
