The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament this week called on the EU to do its utmost to support stabilisation in Libya and the UN-led talks in Geneva to bring together all factions in the country and halt what could become an all-out civil war. It is essential to bring back security within the country to restore the democratic transition process that the Libyan people await and yearn for.

S&D Group president Gianni Pittella said:

"We cannot afford in Libya another scenario of war, suffering, destruction and disintegration of the country. We cannot allow the proliferation of weapons, ammunition, explosives and smuggling of arms to fall under the control of terrorism. The S&D Group demands the commitment of the EU and its member states to support a common action for the stabilisation of Libya in coordination with the UN."

S&D MEP Ana Gomes stated:

"While the EU continues to press for a political agreement among Libyan factions, it's imperative to stop civil war and the escalation of the humanitarian crisis spilling over into the region and Libyan territory being used as a sanctuary for terrorist organisations.

"Regional, European and global security are under threat of a failed state in Libya. The EU should be ready to contribute to a UN-mandated intervention in the country, in cooperation with the African Union and Arab League, putting Security Sector Reform (SSR) and Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) as priorities to bring back security and a return to the transition process."
