The president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, took part in the mass rally in Paris today, organised to honour the innocent victims of the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attacks.

Gianni Pittella declared:

"I wanted to come to Paris to show the solidarity of the socialists and democrats across Europe with the people of France. Today, the world was with Paris.  We are all Charlie. Millions of people – of all backgrounds, origins, cultures and religions – came together in the streets to say no to terrorism.

"France has responded to the tragic events of these last few days with great dignity and in the best possible way.

"Even as the emotion of these events subsides, we must not stop there. Terrorism continues to claim many victims and cause much damage in Nigeria and other countries. It's crucial that the European Union becomes more engaged on the international scene.

"Europe must also protect itself. The EU's member states must strengthen their police and judicial co-operation and co-ordinate their intelligence services more effectively."
