EU budget: "Not yet at the end of the road", says Hannes Swoboda
S&D Euro MPs today deplore the lack of progress in the negotiations between the European Parliament and the Irish presidency over the EU budget for the next seven years.
Following talks last night between the negotiators, S&D Group leader Hannes Swoboda said:
"Unfortunately, the offer made by the Irish presidency is not yet sufficient for us to agree. We are not yet at the end of the road.
"We can not accept a seven year EU budget that ties our hands and cuts our ambition in important EU policy areas till 2020.
"This is particularly the case for the fight against youth unemployment. We consider that youth unemployment is a social emergency for Europe. We are calling for strong financial resources to be made available as soon as 2014 and 2015.
"We have had enough hot air from the Council about youth unemployment. What we need now is action and hard cash to back it up".
